BPU Unanimously Approves PSE&G Transmission Line Project
The Township of Montville has suffered a setback in its opposition to the PSE&G Transmission Line Project. Montville is a member of the united municipal coalition that was formed to stop the project.
On February 11, 2010 the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) approved the Public Service & Gas (PSE&G) project to upgrade the power lines through Montville and other Morris, Hunterdon and Essex County towns. The upgrade, along the existing 45 mile right-of-way will include 195 foot high towers. Board members approved the plan by a 5-0 vote, citing that the PSE&G had proven the “reasonable necessity” of the project to ensure future power supply to state residents.
The BPU did set a number of conditions that PSE&G must meet, including efforts to move three (3) towers farther away from the Lazar School on Changebridge Road. Other conditions include possibly relocating other towers, minimizing environmental and visual impacts, eligibility for federally-backed mortgages, and the study of electromagnetic fields that will emanate from the new, higher voltage lines.
The project is also subject to this coming fall’s PJM power need forecast.
PSE&G still needs to obtain state-issued environmental permits and approval from the National Park Service to cross federal park lands.

Lowe’s Approvals Move Forward
On July 1, 2009 the Montville Board of Adjustment approved the construction of a Lowe’s and a 2nd retail building on the site of the GI Auto junk yard. The approval incorporated numerous conditions, many of which need to be reviewed and approved by the Montville Township Committee. Most of these issues relate to traffic flow and control. The Township Committee is currently reviewing the Board of Adjustment record and will finalize approvals via a developers agreement with Lowe’s.
Lowe’s will be making a presentation to the Township Committee at the public meeting scheduled for Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 8:00 PM at Town Hall. The public is encouraged to attend the meeting in order to learn first hand about the issues that will be incorporated into the final developers agreement and offer comment.
Below you will find three (3) links to documents that were submitted by Lowe’s to the Township Committee for public perusal.
