INFORMATION ON MONTVILLE TOWNSHIP’S

SOLICITING AND CANVASSING ORDINANCE

Revised General Ordinance Chapter 281 requires the issuance of a license by the Township of Montville for canvassing, soliciting or peddling. The process to obtain a solicitor vendor permit includes a two page application along with required documentation filed in the Township Clerk’s office. A fingerprint check is also required and a records background check is performed by the Montville Police Department. The Township Committee is the last approval necessary once clearance has been secured through the screening process. The yellow permit card issued includes a photo ID and thumbprint impression of the solicitor. The permit card needs to be on the person and available for review if asked. The permit card is valid for one year from date of issuance. Soliciting is permitted Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Please note nonprofit organization canvassers do not have the same requirements as above; however, they must register with the Police Department and the Township Clerk’s office providing information as to when they intend to canvass, names of the canvassers, and vehicles being used.

Montville Township also has a “NO SOLICITATION LIST” that is provided to the solicitors when they are issued their permits. Chapter 281-7 (E) reads:

No person subject to the terms of this chapter shall make any solicitation within the Township limits where solicitors are notified by sign that soliciting is prohibited or which is contained on a list maintained by the Township of residences not to be solicited. The Township Clerk shall provide each person securing a permit or special permit with such list and shall take suitable steps to inform the residents of the Township that they may be included on such list if they so choose.
