The Health Department is headed by the Health Officer and is responsible for a wide array of public health, safety and environmental areas including: Vital Statistics, Animal Control, Dial-A-Ride, Environmental Health and Preventative, and Personal and Community Health. Health services are also provided to residents of Mountain Lakes through an inter-local agreement with the Borough. School nursing services are provided to nonpublic schools under a contract with the Montville Township Board of Education. PEOSHA-mandated Blood Borne Pathogen Programs and Hepatitis B vaccinations are provided for occupationally exposed municipal employees and volunteers of Montville Township and the Borough of Mountain Lakes.

Health fairs, food handler seminars, employee right-to-know training seminars, flu immunization clinics, pneumonia immunization clinics, stroke prevention clinics cancer and blood screenings are provided by the Health Department at Chilton Hospital or in municipal facilities. The Health Department is a registered Medicare provider which allows for the submission of qualified expenses for reimbursement by the federal government.

Septic system installations and abandonments and well sealings are overseen by the Department. Planning Board and site plan reviews are conducted as necessary. Garbage and litter complaints are also investigated. The Department tracks and enforces the proper disposal of medical waste.

Food and drink licenses are issued for various church and civic events. Food establishments are inspected regularly. Tobacco Age of Sale Enforcement is conducted to stop the sale of tobacco products to minors.

Rabies continues to be a concern in Montville. Rabies clinics are held regularly prior to dog or cat licensing.
